Hacked Email Account

Why have you been hacked? It’s not personal, it’s more than likely that you have a weak password, or you have a computer virus, or you have accidentally downloaded some malware. Whatever it is you need to fix it and here’s how:

  1. Scan your computer and make sure your PC is free of malware and viruses –
    1. Presuming that you have anti-virus software installed, make sure it’s up-to-date and then run a FULL scan.
    2. Once you have done a virus scan on your pc then download, install and run the following free scanners:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/ – Use the free version
      http://www.superantispyware.com/ – Free edition
  2. When everything is clean – Login to your cPanel, go to the email section, click on ‘Add/Remove E-mail Account(s) and change your email address password to something really secure. If you can’t think of anything other than a name of your cat or dog as a password, which could be the reason why you got hacked in the first place 😉 then use the ‘Password Generator’.
  3. Before you logout of your cPanel, change your cPanel login password via the ‘Preferences’ section – Again you can use the ‘Password Generator’ to create a strong password.

How To Protect Your cPanel password:

  • Memorize your password, do not write it down.
  • Do not share your password. Create a new account instead.
  • Avoid using one password for all your logins.
  • Don’t provide your password to someone for assistance unless you verify:
    • They need the password
    • They are who they say they are
  • Avoid logging in from public computers.
  • Change your password frequently.

Tips for choosing a password:

  • Use the cPanel Password Generator.
  • Avoid dictionary words.
  • Avoid familiar items (names, phone number, etc).
  • Use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters.
  • Use more characters (7+)
